Christmas in March!

We regularly have our wine club and other wine orders shipped to Chris’ office WEBCO Security. Its the best solution for us because she or another employee is always there during regular mail delivery times.  If you have never had wine shipped, an adult over 21 must to be present to sign for the wine or they won’t leave it.  That can be very inconvenient!

From time to time I stop by and have lunch with Chris and Michelle (our daughter works there also).  Its a nice get a way to socialize and eat because I work remote.

Today was an extra special day…

Last February we visited one of our favorite places in the world; Napa!  We have some great friends that work both at Joseph Phelps and Charles Krug.  Since we had not visited Charles Krug we decided to go over and sample the wines and say hi to Robert who works in the tasting room.

As we headed towards the tasting room, we were pleasantly greeted by Robert.   Upon entering the room we headed in the right direction towards an open area with a long tasting bar.  Facing the table up high was a shelf with various bottles of Charles Krug.  It was a warm environment and both Chris and I felt welcomed by the entire staff.

As we were sampling some of the wines a few ladies came in.  From what we could gather, it sounded like they had just booked a wedding event at the winery.  We shared in some small talk while the ladies were very pleased and excited about hosting the upcoming event.  I could only image having a wedding at the winery!  Chris and I should renew ours in Napa someday.  We will celebrate 26 years there again in May!

At the end of the tasting we wanted to purchase something that would cellar for quite some time and also act as a conversation piece the day I pull the cork.  I asked Robert for the large format bottle list to see what they had available.  Reviewing the list I noticed a 2008 Reserve Generations 6.0L bottle.  The Generations is a Bordeaux Red Blend.  You may recall that Bordeaux style wines are one of my favorites.

As I was purchasing the wine I cannot remember if I asked or if it was offered?  But we noticed other bottles which had been signed by various Mondavi members so the conversation came about having the signatures of Marc, Pete Mondavi Sr. and Peter Mondavi Jr personalize our bottle.  We were pretty excited over the fact they would all be willing to sign the bottle for us.

I was stoked seeing their signatures.

As I was writing this blog and reminiscing about the day in Napa , I was reviewing the Charles Krug website.  Reading the history of the family I noticed there is a Minnesota connection:

Cesare Mondavi emigrated from Marches, Italy in 1906, to Minnesota and worked in the iron mines. In 1908, he returned to Italy to marry Rosa Grassi and settled in Virginia, Minnesota where they operated a boarding house and saloon. Four children were born to the couple: Mary, Helen, Robert and Peter.

I can truly say great things and people “do” come from Minnesota!

Cheers!
