Wine and Cheese Pairing at Joseph Phelps Vineyards

4g

Last Saturday we attended a seminar at Joseph Phelps Vineyards.  The seminar is something new at Phelps.  When Chris heard about the seminar on facebook a couple of weeks ago, I called right away to reserve a space.  The Wine & Cheese pairing is a complete guided wine tasting and pairing of nine cheeses, nuts, fruits and other delicacies. It allows you to experience how wine and food interact in concert or contrast while discovering your preferences.  In future blogs I want to have my pairing with some of my close friends.

There were four groups (ten people) in the seminar.  Some from various locations in California and a couple from St. Louis.  It was an interesting group and we shared some of our wine experiences together.  In general our tasting with the food and wine matched each other.

The wines offered at the pairing were:

  1. 2010 Sauvignon Blanc
  2. 2009 Freestone Chardonnay
  3. 2008 Freestone Pinot Noir
  4. 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
  5. 2009 Eisrebe

I do not plan on sharing all of the details of the cheese, fruit or nuts.  I can say it was a good variety and they enhanced the tasting experience.  Next time you are eating an apple try it with a Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and a Chardonnay.  If you have three open by chance that would be a bonus ;-).  You maybe surprised on how the apple and wine blend together.  I can say we did!

After the tasting we cleansed our palette with another sample of 2009 Napa Cab and went out to the back terrace to taste some 2008 Insignia and 2006 Backus.  The Backus was tasting really well.  Can I say yummy!!

I would definitely give the seminar a try.  Even if you pair food and wine now, you will learn something new.

Life is too short to drink crappy wine.  Expand your palate and keep trying.

  • This was a lot of fun! There were a lot of interesting tates and pairings… By far, the “Skyhill Farms, Plain Chevre, Napa Valley – Goat’s Milk Cheese” was my favorite! You can find great buys at “Sunshine” right in St. Helena and save a lot of money over the bigger, well known stores like D&D… even though theirs are great too. We made a point to go find this cheese to take home in our suitcase! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it. Tastes a lot like BUTTER! 🙂

  • Hi, i think that i noticed you visited my weblog so i came to return the favor?.I am trying to to find issues to improve my site!I assume its good enough to use some of your ideas!!

    • Sure, go ahead and use some of my ideas. If you do, please mention my blog ok?

    • Can I just say what a relief to find soomene who at some point knows what they’re talking about on the internet. You categorically know how to bring an issue to light and make it compelling. More people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I cant believe youre not more popular because you definitely have the gift.
