2012 Kirkland Chardonnay

Chris hosted an all company appreciation event, sailing on Lake Pepin recently.  It was her way of saying thank you to the WEBCO Staff. She felt that by including spouses or significant others, they too would understand our appreciation.  The group was a total of 18 people. She hired a charter bus so that everyone could have a good time and not have to worry about driving after a day on the lake consuming favorite beverages.  One of the things we had to do before the sailing event was going to the liquor store and buy some beer and wine.  We chose the local Costco since we were there buying food for the trip anyways.

Our local Costco’s have a pretty good variety of wine and beer.  They carry their own Kirkland wine label and I have to admit the Kirkland wines that I have bought in the past have all been pretty good.  For the price they too are a good value and if you check the label, many of the winemakers are from our favorite regions in CA.  The 2012 Kirkland Chardonnay is another value wine.

The sailing on two boats was a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed the wine!

Here are my tasting notes.

Sight
The Chardonnay had a nice amber hue, was clear in my glass and has a pale color depth.  The nice amber color comes from fermentation in an oak barrel called “Oak Maturation”.

Smell
I was surprised how aromatic the Chardonnay was before I swirled the wine in my glass.  It was very fruity and I could smell melon, green apple, and other citrus notes.

Taste
The Chardonnay was slightly sweet and was medium-bodied.  The acidity was lively and I did not notice and tannins.  It was crisp so it did not go through Malo-Lactic fermentation (MLF).  If you are not sure what MLF does, it’s a second fermentation that gives the Chardonnay a more buttery rich finish.  I noted flavors of sweet apple and pear.  This wine was flavorful and the finish was medium.

ABV: 13.5%

How Much:  I think Chris paid $12.00 for the 2012 Kirkland Chardonnay, which is a real value.

I rated the 2012 Kirkland Chardonnay Three glasses.
