2010 Poggio delle Regine Rosso

3g

Castello delle Regine is in Umbria Italy.  Umbria is due north of Rome and sits in the middle section of Italy, it is appreciated for its landscapes, traditions, history, artistic legacy and influence on high culture.

The estate’s 1000 acres included 200 acres of vineyards and 100 acres for cattle called Chianina.  Chianina  is an Italian breed of cattle.  Chris and I had the opportunity to spend a night at the Castello delle Regine estate and have dinner at the estate owned restaurant.  Prior to an excellent dinner we were given a tour of the winery and had a personal tour of the estate by owner Paolo Nodari.  To learn more about the trip read this blog:  Poggio delle Regine White.

Chris was making one of my recent favorites spicy grits with shrimp.  I wanted an Italian wine that would be slightly tart that would soften with the cream and spice.

Sight
The Rosso was medium with a ruby hue.  The wine was very clear.

Smell
The red wine was moderate to aromatic with young fruity notes.  I could smell raspberry, cranberry, and spice.

Taste
My initial tastes was dry and medium bodied.  As I suspected the Rosso was slightly tart as I hoped.  The tannins were medium and soft.  Tasting the wine I had a dry mouth feel in my mid palate with cherry flavors and light fruit layers.

abv: 13%

How much:  We had a bottle of white and red in our room as part of the package staying over night.  Looking on the website it was 4.90EU (less than $7).  It’s a value wine and pretty good.

Blend: 85% Sangiovese, and 15% Syrah

I rated the 2010 Poggio delle Regine Rosso three glasses.  It’s a pretty good wine for the price and it paired well with the meal.
