2009 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon

4g

Our friends Pete and Martinique were flying in recently on a Friday around dinner time and were planning to stay at our house Saturday night for my big birthday celebration.  Martinique had not been to Minnesota wanted to stay downtown on Friday. We originally planned on having dinner with them and then we planned on them coming early Saturday to help Chris with preparations.  We ended up declining the dinner invite because there just wasn’t enough time.

Chris shopped Thursday afternoon and spent all day Friday preparing for Saturday.  We ended up making one more trip to the grocery store around 6:30 pm and were both glad that we had passed on dinner out.  When we returned from the grocery store I was getting really hungry, but I felt bad that Chris had to prepare something on top of all of the other dishes.  Neither of us wanted to go out again and besides, there are no real good restaurant options nearby unless you like chain or fast food.

After a little thought we decided on shrimp and a salad.  It was Friday after all, so I should have a nice glass of wine to share with my girl.  I wandered down to the cellar and started pulling bottles.  Finally, I decided a younger bottle wine was in order.

Sight
The Cabernet had a medium color depth and the hue was purple.

Smell
Before I swirled my glass I could tell the wine was very aromatic and young.  I smelled oak, spice, caramel, cocoa, and sweet ripe red fruit.

Taste
This Cabernet Sauvignon was dry and slightly astringent.  It was full-bodied and the acidity was lively with soft tannin’s.  As I took my initial tastes of the Cab, it was soft and silky with a mid palate finish.  It was slightly sweet with a long finish.

abv: 14.5%

How Much:  $55 per bottle before any club discount.

We both really enjoyed the  2009 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon.  I have many vintages and am tempted to pull a few bottles and have a vertical tasting.  Maybe 2005 through 2007?

I rated the 2009 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon four glasses.
