2009 Clos Pegase Cabernet Franc

2smaller

We had heard that Vintage Wine Estates (who owns Girard, Cosentino Winery, and others) had recently purchased Clos Pegase winery in August of 2013.  (For more information on the purchase click here.)  Chris and I had a planned trip in early September so we decided that we would stop by and check out the winery.

We stopped on a really hot summer day so we were both hustling to enter the building.  The walk was long from the parking lot, but we noticed many forms of outdoor art during our walk in.  One thing I found interesting was a big thumb!

Once inside we were greeted by a nice hospitality gentleman.  We mentioned that we were new to Clos Pegase and that we were members of Cosentino.  We had the impression the staff was happy with the change of ownership and were especially pleased with the penny shipping.  The penny shipping is not a special, rather is always available until further notice.

We tasted our way through many wines and were impressed with a lot of them.  Chris decided to join the club (for a while) and get a sense of their wines.  The nice thing about joining most clubs is you can cancel at any time if you wish.  Just a few weeks ago we received the fall shipment and inside the box were two bottles; the Cabernet Sauvignon and a Cabernet Franc.  After the wine had a chance to sit for a couple of days I decided to try the 2009 Cabernet Franc.

IMG_1239I noticed the screw cap right away.  I wonder why they use a screw cap?

Sight
The Cabernet Franc was medium with a garnet hue.

Smell
After I poured us both a glass I thought the Cabernet Franc was aromatic, young and fruity.  I noted sweet blueberry, oak, and light cocoa on the nose.

Taste
The Cabernet Franc was dry and medium-bodied, while the acidity was lively.  The tannins were medium and soft and I thought that the finish was slightly tart.  I felt the tannins in my mid palate and I smack my tongue and lips to get more flavor with every taste!  The finish was long and there was not any specific or prominent flavor noted.

abv: 14.6%

How much?  Retail price was $35.

Wine composition: 89% Cabernet Franc, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot.

I feel the 2009 Cabernet Franc was priced slightly high for its quality.  I have had better Cabernet Francs in the same price range that had better fruit flavors with a nicer finish.  I think the Cabernet Franc should be priced in the low to mid twenty-dollar range.

I rated the 2009 Cabernet Franc two glasses.
