2008 Shining Hill Red Wine

3g

During our last visit to Seattle we had the opportunity to have a tasting at the Col Solare tasting room at Chateau St. Michelle where we sampled four wines; two Col Solare wines (2008 and 2009) and two Shining Hill (2008 and 2009).  Shining Hill is what I call the “Second Cru” meaning the second wine label for Col Solare.  Shining Hill allows maximum enjoyment without years of aging – a unique preview of the vintage and the characteristics that will be found in their next vintage flagship wines.

Col Solare’s tasting room resides in a glassed off section towards the back part of the large tasting room where the winery holds large gatherings.  Tastings are by reservation only so if you plan on a trip to Seattle and want to try Col Solare and Shining Hill, plan ahead.

Sight
Deep color depth, purple hue.

Smell
Moderate aromas, young-fruity.  I could smell dark fruit, vanilla, spice, and cocoa.

Taste
This red wine was dry.  It was full-bodied and the acidity was balanced.  It had moderate tannins that were slightly astringent throughout the mid palate upon the finish, that was long and overall it was flavorful.

Blend: 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Syrah, 4% Cabernet Franc.

ABV: 14.5%

Region/Appellation: Columbia Valley

How much: $40.

I rated 2008 Shining Hill Red Wine three plus glasses.

Life is too short to drink crappy wine!
