2006 Michel-Schumberger Pinot Noir

We just got back from a trip to Las Vegas.  It was a business trip for Chris’ company WEBCO Security.  We were there to attend the Internal Security Conference (ISC).  We flew out Wednesday of last week and returned Saturday.  We spent most of Sunday working on chores and getting ready to go back to work.

Chris decided to grill some turkey burgers and I was feeling like having a glass of wine.  I wondered down to the cellar and grabbed a bottle of 2006 Pinot Noir from Michel-Schumberger.

This wine is crafted into a Burgundian style Pinot Noir.  It is nothing like a California fruit forward style Pinot Noir.

As I pulled the cork it showed very little age.

It was time to try the wine.  After I poured wine into the glass and examined it, I noticed a medium purple color and the meniscus was lighter than the core.

Smelling the wine I detected a deep cherry and vanilla nose (this comes from the toasting of the barrel).   I also noted a floral like nose, which was similar to an Archipel we enjoyed recently.  When we first tried the wine, I noticed that the tannins approached my mid palate with a long finish.  I have to admit it was a little bitter and it was hard to taste the fruit.  Chris liked the nose, but once she tasted it she stated right away that she did not like it.  We shared her glass with Jake!  He too liked the nose right away, but also noticed the “bitter” finish.  Since we didn’t finish the bottle, after dinner I placed the cork back in because I thought I would give it a try again the next day.

The following day I poured the last glass.  I immediately noticed the bitter finish of the wine was gone.  I could now taste more dark cherry, some spice and it was a little earthy.

Chris is not a fan of a Burgundian style Pinot Noir so she rated it one glass.  I am rating this as a 2 ½ glasses just because it was better the next day.

Life is too short to drink crappy wine.  Expand your palate and keep trying.
